Sleep Duration — Korea and Japan, the World's Most Sleep-Deprived Nations

Fighting for last place in OECD — Why both nations can't sleep

Korea and Japan share one more commonality beyond economy and culture: TOP 2 most sleep-deprived nations in the world.

Global Sleep Duration Ranking (OECD)

Rank Country Avg Sleep Note
1 (most) South Africa 9h 13m
5 France 8h 32m
OECD Average 8h 22m
6 USA 8h 21m
... ... ...
2nd last Korea 7h 51m OECD avg -31min
Last Japan 7h 22m OECD avg -60min

Japan sleeps ~30 minutes less than Korea.

Why Koreans Can't Sleep

  1. Long work hours: ~1,900 hrs/year (OECD avg ~1,700). "Revenge bedtime procrastination" — sacrificing sleep to reclaim personal time after overtime
  2. Education pressure: High school seniors average 5-6 hours sleep. Cram schools until dawn
  3. Nightlife infrastructure: 24hr convenience stores, 3AM delivery, PC bangs, late-night buses

Why Japanese Can't Sleep

  1. Long commute: Tokyo avg ~50min-1hr one way = 2hr/day lost
  2. Inemuri (居眠り) culture: Dozing in meetings/trains viewed positively as "worked so hard." Paradoxically reinforces "sleeping less at night is OK"
  3. Overtime culture: 付き合い残業 (staying because boss stays)
  4. Night routine: Izakaya → home → bathing (30min-1hr in tub) → late bedtime

Economic Cost (RAND 2016)

Country GDP Loss from Sleep Deprivation Rate
Japan ~$138B 2.92% of GDP (highest)
USA ~$411B 2.28%
UK ~$50B 1.86%

"Sleep Less, Succeed More" Myth

Both countries share this cultural belief:

  • Korea: "4당5락" — sleep 4hrs=pass, 5hrs=fail (student saying)

  • Japan: "寝る間も惜しんで" — too dedicated to waste time sleeping

Modern sleep science clearly refutes both. Sleep deprivation reduces cognition, memory, judgment, and immunity. Productivity drops proportionally to lost sleep.

3

Japan: Long commute (2hr round) + inemuri culture + obligatory overtime

4

Economic loss: Japan 2.92% of GDP ($138B) — highest among surveyed

5

Shared myth: "Sleep less, succeed more" — clearly refuted by sleep science
