Wedding Culture — Korea's "Wedding Industry" vs Japan's "Jimi-kon"

Cash gifts, dowry, honeymoon set vs return gifts, modest weddings, no-wedding — costs, formats, family dynamics

In Korea, marriage is "life's biggest event and biggest financial burden." In Japan, weddings are becoming lighter in significance.

Wedding Costs

Korea: Avg 200-300M won (including housing)

Core of Korean wedding cost is "the house." Traditional split: groom = house, bride = appliances/furniture. Total: minimum 200M~500M+ won.

Japan: Avg ~3.5-4M yen (~32-36M won)

Japanese wedding cost is about the ceremony itself. No "jeonse" system means no lump sum for housing. Newlyweds renting apartments is normal.

Gift Money

Korean: Cash envelopes (friends 50-100K won). 300-500 guests → recover 30-50M won.

Japanese: Goshugi (friends 30,000 yen = ~270K won — much more expensive per person) BUT hosts give return gifts (引出物) worth 30-50% of goshugi.

Wedding Formats

Korea: 30-min "factory wedding" at banquet halls. Multiple couples per day. Recent trend toward small/outdoor/overseas weddings.

Japan: Hotel, guest house, restaurant, Shinto shrine, jimi-kon (modest), nashi-kon (no ceremony) — ~40-50% of 2020s couples skip the ceremony entirely.

Yedan/Honsu vs Nothing

Korea's unique yedan (gifts to in-laws) and honsu (bride's appliance/furniture set) culture doesn't exist in Japan. This cost-sharing often causes family conflicts and broken engagements.

Shared Problem: Not Marrying

Korea: "Want to marry but can't afford it." Japan: "Don't need marriage." Both face declining marriage/birth rates as top social issues.
